Our muscles work in pairs, with one muscle contracting (shortening) to move a joint, and the other relaxing (lengthening) to allow the movement to occur. When we maintain good posture, the muscles that are responsible for holding us upright are active and in a state of balanced tension. However, when we have poor posture, these muscles become shortened and hypertonic, meaning they are constantly contracted and unable to relax fully.


At the same time, the muscles that are responsible for moving us, such as your become lengthened and inactive. This means they are stretched out and unable to contract effectively. Over time, this can lead to a loss of muscle strength and flexibility, as well as an increased risk of injuries.

The other structures that will also be involved are fascia, a thin, fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, organs, blood vessels, nerves, and bones. It is found throughout the body, from head to toe. Fascia can contract and relax, which helps to move muscles and support the body. It also plays a role in proprioception, which is the body's awareness of its position and movement in space.

Locked long and locked short are terms used to describe these two extremes of postural positions. Locked long muscles are lengthened and inactive, while locked short muscles are shortened and hypertonic. Both conditions can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
